| Finally,
Ash and his pals make it to Vermilion City, and they all go to the Pokémon
Center to get cleaned up. While there, Ash and Pikachu notice a lot of
injured Pokémon are there. Nurse Joy tells them that they all lost
against the Gym Leader Lt. Surge. After Pikachu is fully healed, Ash goes
to the Vermilion Gym to challenge Surge. Surge taunts Ash for having a
baby Pikachu and shows Ash his Raichu, the evolved form of Pikachu. The
Raichu teases Pikachu, causing Pikachu to want to fight, which is very
unlike him! Ash and Pikachu try their best but Raichu wipes the floor with
Pikachu, knocking him out cold. Ash brings Pikachu back to the Pokémon
Center. While there, Joy suggests that Ash evolve Pikachu into Raichu,
but Pikachu refuses and Ash decides not to force him. Team Rocket, who
have been watching Pikachu battle, show up and cheer Pikachu and Ash on,
if only to make sure that Pikachu defeats Raichu so they haven't wasted
all the time trying to steal it. Challenging Surge again, Pikachu now has
the edge because it has learned the speed attacks that Raichu never learned
before evolving. Ash wins the Thunder Badge as Raichu and Surge congratulate
him and Pikachu. Meanwhile, Team Rocket realizes that they wasted the whole
episode cheering the good guys.
